Envoy Urges Closer Ties between Iran, Zimbabwe
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Ambassador to Zimbabwe Ahmad Erfanian underscored the importance of enhanced ties between Tehran and Harare, saying the volume of trade transactions between the two countries should increase.
“We spoke about the excellent relations between Zimbabwe and Iran,” Erfanian told reporters following a meeting with Zimbabwe’s Acting President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Friday, the Herald reported.
He added, “As you may be aware, the relations between the two countries date back to before the time Zimbabwe got independence.”
The ties between the two nations should lay the foundation for stronger bilateral trade and economic cooperation, the Iranian envoy stressed.
“During the last three decades of cooperation, four Iranian Presidents have visited Zimbabwe and President Mugabe has also visited Iran four times".
He went on to say that the two countries should raise the volume of their trade to overcome the sanctions imposed by the West.
There are growing economic, social and cultural ties between Iran and Zimbabwe. Relations between the two countries started in 1979 when the late Vice President Simon Muzenda visited Tehran to meet leaders of the Islamic Revolution of Iran. Zimbabwe opened an embassy in Tehran in 2003.
