57th IAEA General Conference Convenes in Vienna

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - An events-filled week awaits delegates and governmental representatives attending the 57th annual IAEA General Conference taking place 16-20 September 2013 at the Agency's headquarters in Vienna, Austria.

Considered to be the most important event in its annual calendar of meetings, the General Conference is when representatives from the IAEA's Member States, including several at the ministerial level, meet to consider the Agency's programme and activities and approve its budget for the coming year.

Delegates will also consider a range of topics on the peaceful development of nuclear technologies. They include those related to further strengthening the IAEA's programmes in areas of nuclear, radiation, and waste safety; nuclear security, nuclear science, technology and applications, technical co-operation; and improving the efficiency of the safeguards system.

Other items on the provisional agenda include the approval of the appointment of the IAEA Director General for a second term; nuclear security; strengthening the Agency's activities related to technical cooperation, nuclear science, technology and applications; and strengthening the effectiveness of the safeguards system and applications of the Model Additional Protocol.

As customary, IAEA Director Yukiya Amano is expected to deliver a statement to the Conference during the opening session on 17 September, where he will highlight major developments in the IAEA's work, the IAEA website reported.

A number of events are also being organized in conjunction with the General Conference foremost being a special Scientific Forum on The Blue Planet, focusing on nuclear applications for sustainable marine environment.

The Forum will bring together experts, scientists and business representatives from around the world who are working to protect our oceans. The forum will highlight the challenges presented by climate change and ocean acidification, as well as the role of nuclear applications in supporting a sustainable marine environment.

Additionally, dozens of exhibits and side events are organized during the General Conference, highlighting activities and special programmes being undertaken by key departments at the IAEA and several IAEA Member States.
