Iranian Expats in US Mark Demise Anniversary of Imam Khomeini (+Photos)
WASHINGTON, DC (Tasnim) – A number of Iranian expatriates and Muslims living in the US attended a ceremony in Virginia to mark the demise anniversary of Imam Khomeini, the late founder of the Islamic Republic.
According to Tasnim dispatches, the gathering was held in Manassas Mosque in Virginia on Saturday night with Iranian expatriates and Muslims paying tribute to Imam Khomeini.
The ceremony was also held in commemoration of the Iranian martyrs who were killed in protests on June 5, 1963, against the arrest of Imam Khomeini after denouncing Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the Western-back monarch of Iran at the time, and Israel.
Iranians at home also held a massive ceremony marking the 28th anniversary of the demise of Imam Khomeini (RA) at his mausoleum in southern Tehran on Sunday.
Visitors from across the country, as well as high-ranking Iranian officials along with groups of foreign guests and ambassadors, took part in the commemoration ceremony.
Ayatollah Ruhollah Moussavi Khomeini, better known as Imam Khomeini, engineered Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, which led to the overthrow of the US-backed Shah of Iran.
Born in 1902, he grew to become the iconic leader of the Iranian nation’s struggle in the 1970s against the centuries-old monarchical tyranny.
Imam Khomeini passed away on June 3, 1989, at the age of 87.
