Russia: US Strike on Pro-Syrian Forces Violates International law

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Tuesday's airstrike launched by the US in Syria against fighters who support the Damascus regime violates international law, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Wednesday.

"As on May 18, when the same region was struck, the current one was carried out in violation of international law, according to our estimates," Ryabkov told reporters.

He pointed out that "the motivations we hear from the central command of the US Armed Forces are, to put it mildly, questionable."

The pro-government Syrian forces that have been attacked by the US-led coalition posed no threat to the United States, according to Ryabkov.

"As far as we understand, those militarized structures on which the attack was carried out did not pose any military threat to the forces led by the US," Ryabkov told reporters, Sputnik reported.

Reuters also reported that a Syrian military source said the strike had caused deaths and material damage and showed the coalition was "in support of terrorism".

The Syrian military command warned against the dangers of escalation, the source added.

The US military had repeatedly warned massing forces to stay away from a so-called "de-escalation" zone near a garrison used by American Special Forces and US-backed fighters around the southern town of At Tanf.
