TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The president of Iraq offered his condolences to Iran over deaths of people in twin terrorist attacks that hit Tehran on Wednesday, and expressed the Arab country’s solidarity with the Islamic Republic in the fight against terrorism.

In a message to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Wednesday, Fouad Masoum strongly condemned the attacks in capital Tehran, claimed by the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group.

He also voiced Iraq’s readiness to cooperate with Iran in the war against terrorism.

On Wednesday morning, terrorists launched simultaneous attacks on Iran’s parliament building in downtown Tehran and on the mausoleum of late founder of the Islamic Republic Imam Khomeini, south of the city.

Four armed assailants, dresses as women, attacked the parliament buildings in the morning.

Equipped with AK-47 assault rifles, handguns and suicide vests, the gunmen killed security guards and ordinary people before holding people hostage in the upper floors of the building.

Security forces laid a siege to the parliament for several hours. Three of the gunmen were shot dead in an exchange of gunfire, while the other blew himself up.

In the other attack at the shrine of Imam Khomeini, one suicide bomber blew himself up while the second one was killed in a gunfight.

According to officials, 12 people have been killed and 42 others wounded in the two incidents.
