Zarif: Iran Never to Breach Nuclear Deal Unilaterally

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif reiterated the country’s policy to meet its obligations under the July 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), saying Tehran would never breach the deal unilaterally.

In a meeting in the Norwegian capital of Oslo on Monday night, Zarif held talks with European Union Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini about a range of issues, including the latest developments in the Middle East region and efforts to implement the JCPOA.

He underlined that the Islamic Republic will never be the first side that violates the JCPOA, referring that in case other parties renege on the deal, Iran would do the same.

Mogherini, for her part, emphasized that the EU is resolved to meet its commitments under the nuclear deal between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, US, Britain, France, and Germany).

Speaking to reporters upon his arrival in Norway for the Oslo Forum, Zarif had slammed a recent move by the US Senate to impose new sanctions against Tehran as a testimony of US officials’ shortsightedness.

The Iranian top diplomat had said he would raise the subject of the US breach of the JCPOA in a meeting with Mogherini.

Iran and the six countries on July 14, 2015, reached a conclusion over the text of the JCPOA. The accord took effect in January 2016 and was supposed to terminate all nuclear-related sanctions against Iran all at once, but its implementation has been hampered mainly due to US policies.
