Iranian Parliament Drafts Motion to Counteract New US Move: MP
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission has drafted a motion to counteract a recent move by the US Senate to advance a bill that would impose new sanctions on Tehran, the spokesman for the commission said.
Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Hossein Naqavi Hosseini said that at the order of Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission has drafted a plan to counteract the sanctions that are likely to be approved by the US Senate.
The motion would be discussed and approved at the first session of the commission after its members return from their constituencies in coming weeks, he said.
The parliamentarian further emphasized that the US Senate’s move is a blatant violation of the July 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
On June 7, the US Senate voted to advance a bill that would impose new sanctions on Iran. The vote was 92-7 on a procedural motion to end debate on the Iran sanctions bill, clearing the way for a vote later on passage of the legislation.
The US legislation would impose new sanctions on Iran over its ballistic missile program, its alleged human rights violation and claims of support for terrorist organizations. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee passed it 18-3 last month.
Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) on July 14, 2015, reached a conclusion over the text of the JCPOA. The accord took effect in January 2016 and was supposed to terminate all nuclear-related sanctions against Iran all at once, but its implementation has been hampered mainly due to US policies.
