TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iranian President Hassan Rouhani congratulated Muslims on Eid al-Fitr, describing the festive occasion as a manifestation of Muslim unity for defusing discord and countering violence, extremism and poverty across the Islamic world.

In a message on Sunday evening, President Rouhani congratulated the world Muslims, particularly the Iranian people, on the Islamic festival of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

Hailing the Eid as a great festival of Muslim solidarity, the president called on Islamic countries to join hands to settle the differences and tackle woes such as poverty, extremism, immorality, violence and terrorism.

He also highlighted the significant role that Muslim intellectuals and elites can play in enlightening people on the principles of “justice, rationality and peace in Islamic teachings” as part of efforts to unify the Islamic Ummah (community) and foil hostile divisive plots.

President Rouhani further praised the Iranian nation for a huge turnout in Friday’s demonstrations marking the International Quds Day, an annual display of solidarity with Palestinians and condemnation of the Israeli and US crimes and policies.

Eid al-Fitr, also called Feast of Breaking the Fast, is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims around the world.

On the Eid day, which has fallen on Monday in Iran, Muslims attend prayers in congregation, listen to sermons and give Zakat al-Fitr or donations to the poor.
