UN, EU Hail Iran’s Compliance with JCPOA

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The United Nation’s political chief, the European Union’s UN ambassador, as well as the envoys of Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany praised Iran for remaining committed to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), an accord on its nuclear program.

Speaking at a Security Council meeting on progress on the JCPOA, held on Thursday afternoon, UN political chief Jeffrey Feltman said the nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) has remained on track, calling on all participants in the agreement to continue to commit to its full implementation.

“Two years after the conclusion of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the Secretary-General is deeply encouraged by the continued commitment by all participants to the agreement,” Feltman said, according to the UN website.

The meeting also heard briefings from João Pedro Vale de Almeida, Head of the Delegation of the European Union, and Sebastiano Cardi of Italy, Facilitator for the implementation of resolution 2231 (2015), by which the 15-member Council endorsed the accord.

Introducing the Secretary-General’s latest report on the implementation of resolution 2231 (2015) through which the Council endorsed the accord, Feltman said reports of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) continued to show Iran’s compliance with parts of the agreement under its purview and the Secretary-General had not received any information regarding the supply to Iran of nuclear-related items undertaken contrary to the provisions of the resolution.

While the ambassadors from Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany also acknowledged Iran’s commitment to the nuclear deal, US Ambassador Nikki Haley accused Tehran of "destructive and destabilizing" actions from ballistic missile launches to arms smuggling.

Haley said that Washington would adhere to the deal to rein in Iran's nuclear program while conducting the comprehensive review. She also rehashed the same accusation that Iran has violated the 2015 resolution, which she accused the Security Council of ignoring.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (also known as E3+3) reached the 159-page nuclear agreement in July 2015 and implemented it in January 2016.

Since the historic deal was signed in Vienna, the IAEA has repeatedly confirmed the Islamic Republic’s compliance with its commitments under the JCPOA.
