Syria Army Repels Daesh Offensive in Deir Ez-Zor

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syria’s army and its allies foiled a major attack by Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorists in the eastern province of Deir ez-Zor, killing and injuring scores of them.

Daesh militants suffered serious setbacks on Monday after they attempted to sneak into areas near Um Abboud, southwest of Deir ez-Zor, SANA news agency reported.

A large number of the terrorists were killed and injured during the counterattack.

Separately, the army bombed the terrorists’ gathering centers in the areas of Panorama, Liwa al-Tamin, al-Ommal and Huaijet Saqir in Deir ez-Zor.

Over the past six years, Syria has been fighting foreign-sponsored militancy. UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura estimated in August 2016 that more than 400,000 people had been killed in the Syrian crisis until then. The UN has stopped its official casualty count in Syria, citing its inability to verify the figures it receives from various sources.
