Afghanistan’s Hezb-i-Islami Decries Tripartite Opposition Alliance
KABUL (Tasnim) – A spokesman for Hezb-i-Islami, an Afghan party led by Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, denounced an alliance of three other Afghan parties that have been recently made in Turkey, saying such anti-government coalitions are formed to serve personal interests.
In an interview with the Tasnim News Agency, Hashmatullah Arshad, a spokesman for Hizb-e-Islami, said his party firmly rejects the newly-formed tripartite alliance of opponents of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai.
Hizb-e-Islami will not allow any individual or political alliance to seek the overthrow of Afghanistan’s establishment, he underlined.
Expressing Hizb-e-Islami’s support for any move leading to stronger unity in Afghanistan, Arshad said the three-party alliance that has been formed abroad is definitely pursuing personal objectives rather than caring about national interests.
Hezb-i-Islami is led by Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, a former military commander known as one of the most influential Afghan leaders in the fight against Soviet forces in the 1980s.
The reaction came after three Afghan politicians announced the formation of a new alliance against the Kabul government.
Last week, leaders and senior members of the Jamiat-i-Islami Afghanistan (JIA), Hezb-i-Wahdat Mardum, and Junbish-i-Milli Afghanistan parties convened in the Turkish capital of Ankara to form the alliance.
The so-called “High Council of Coalition for Salvation of Afghanistan” coalition is said to be seeking to deal with illegal acts of the unity government and political chaos and to restore public confidence.
