Iran Resolved to Continue Advisory Support for Syrian Nation: MP

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The chairman of the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission reiterated Tehran’s unwavering support for Damascus against foreign-backed terrorists and said the Islamic Republic will continue its advisory mission in the Arab country.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Alaeddin Boroujerdi underlined that Iran is “serious and determined” to combat terrorism and sees no difference between terrorist groups.

Unlike certain countries, the Islamic Republic does not categorize terrorists as “good and bad” ones, the parliamentarian stated.

“We reserve our right to support the Syrian people and government in the fight against terrorists and, according to that right, we will side with the Syrian nation in its campaign against Daesh (ISIS or ISIL) and other terrorist groups,” he went on to say.

The remarks came after the latest round of diplomatic talks for settling the Syria crisis ended in the Kazakh capital of Astana on Wednesday.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.

According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.

In the meantime, Iran has remained a close ally of Syria and supports its legitimate government in the face of foreign-backed militancy.

Tehran insists that the Syrian nation is the only side that has the right to shape the future of its own country, rejecting foreign intervention with the use of force.
