Iran Calls for US Study on Washington's Record in Implementing JCPOA

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Friday Washington should study its performance regarding implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, a deal reached between Iran and six powers over the country's peaceful nuclear program.

Speaking to reporters upon his arrival in New York, Zarif noted that preventing Iran from enjoying full benefits of the JCPOA will not guarantee deal’s durability.

US government and congress measures has prevented big banks of the world to revive ties with Iran. The move is against the JCPOA which underlines improvement of banking cooperation with the Islamic Republic.

That is while international interests in ties with Iran have witnessed remarkable increase after Tehran and the Group 5+1 on July 14, 2015 reached a conclusion over the text of the JCPOA and started implementing it on January 16, 2016.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the foreign minister added that he has no plan to meet the US officials in his recent trip to New York.

Elaborating his view on US-Russian brokered ceasefire for southwest Syria, he noted that Iran supports comprehensive truce in the war-torn region.

Iran tops the list of the countries that support governments, Armies and the nations of the region in the fight against terrorism, Zarif noted.

Zarif arrived in New York early Friday morning to attend the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development and to meet counterparts on the sideline of the forum.

The UN forum is taking place from July 11 to 19, with the ministerial meeting scheduled for July 17-19. It aims to review progress on the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals at the global level and this year’s meeting is held on the theme of “eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity in a changing world”.

Zarif is accompanied in the trip by two of his deputies, Abbas Araqchi and Majid Takht-Ravanchi.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qasemi had said before that no meeting is planned between Zarif and US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, unlike the last couple of years when Zarif was in regular contact with the former top US diplomat, John Kerry, on the 2015 nuclear deal.

Zarif is also scheduled to attend a meeting of the US Council on Foreign Relations next Monday to discuss current developments in the Middle East with the think tank’s president, Richard Haass.
