Bahrainis Stage Anti-Regime Rallies to Condemn New Family Law (+Photos)

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Bahraini people from all walks of life, took to the streets in various cities to voice their outrage over a recent family law approved by the Arab country’s parliament, which people believe is ethnic oppression against the Shiite majority in the country.

Dozens of people staged the rallies on Friday night in various cities and villages to condemn the Al Khalifa regime’s decision on the family law and its continued crackdown on the Shiites in the Persian Gulf country.

The Bahraini Shiite clerics had earlier decried the legislation calling on the parliament to revoke it immediately.

In the new family law, some restrictions have been placed on Shiites in divorce cases, which are contrary to their religious beliefs.

Bahrain, a close ally of the US in the Persian Gulf region, has been witnessing almost daily protests against the ruling Al Khalifa dynasty since early 2011, with Manama using heavy-handed measures in an attempt to crush the demonstrations.

Scores of Bahrainis have been killed and hundreds of others injured and arrested in the ongoing crackdown on the peaceful demonstrations.

Amnesty International and many other international rights organizations have frequently censured the Bahraini regime for the rampant human rights abuses against opposition groups and anti-regime protesters.
