Mild Tremor Jolts Southwestern Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - A 4.3-magnitude earthquake struck an area near the town of Hosseinyeh in Iran’s southwestern province of Khozestan on Monday.

According to a report by the Iranian Seismological Center, the earthquake hit the area at 05:11 local time (0141 GMT).

The epicenter, with a depth of 18 km, was initially determined to be at 32.99 degrees north latitude and 48.30 degrees east longitude.

Iran is located on seismic fault lines and, on average, experiences several quakes every day.

Even moderate quakes can be deadly in the Iranian countryside, where houses are often built of bricks.

Bam in the country’s southeastern province of Kerman witnessed a strong quake in December 2003 which killed 31,000 people.
