Iran Supports Iraq’s Territorial Integrity

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani renewed Tehran’s support for the territorial integrity and unity of Iraq, warning against the long-term dire consequences of any change in the region’s political borders.

“We favor a united Iraq, and hope that the Shiites, Sunnis, and Kurds in Iraq would always maintain a consistent voice against the enemies of Iraq,” President Rouhani said at a meeting with his Iraqi counterpart Fouad Masoum in Tehran on Saturday.

Any change in the region’s geographical borders could create a lot of tensions for decades, the Iranian president warned.

He also highlighted the “very influential” role that Masoum plays in strengthening unity and solidarity in Iraq.

For his part, the visiting Iraqi president praised Iran for the supports it provided for the Arab country in hard times, when Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group invaded many cities of Iraq.

Tehran and Baghdad should enhance cooperation in the same way that they worked together in the war on terrorism, he added.

Masoum is in Iran to attend President Rouhani’s inauguration.
