Iran to Keep Engagement with World: Foreign Minister Zarif
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Mohammad Javad Zarif described the Iranian parliament’s vote of confidence for him to take the helm at the Foreign Ministry for a second term as a testimony to the continuation of Iran’s policy of constructive interaction with the international community.
“Honored to be confirmed by the representatives of our people: affirmation that Iran’s constructive engagement with the world will continue,” Zarif wrote in a Twitter post on Sunday.
During the final round of parliamentary sessions for vetting of President Hassan Rouhani’s proposed ministers on Sunday, Zarif won a vote of confidence to become the foreign minister for another four-year period.
Of the 288 MPs in the ballot, 236 voted for Zarif, 26 voted against, and 26 abstained.
Born in 1960, Zarif was Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations from 2002 to 2007. He is widely regarded as one of Iran’s most distinguished diplomats. He had a major role in the achievement of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).
