Iraqi Forces Reclaim Several Areas in Tal Afar

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iraqi forces and their allies continued to make gains in their fight against Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorists in the town of Tal Afar, located 63 kilometers west of Mosul in Nineveh province, killing 16 militants and recapturing several areas.

Iraqi troops, backed by warplanes, on Sunday stepped up their attack on the terrorists in Tal Afar and inflicted major losses on them, Iraq's al-Sumaria news website reported.

The military aircraft targeted the Takfiri militants’ positions 14 times, claiming the lives of 16 of them.

A number of their vehicles and arsenals belonging to the terror group were also destroyed during the raids.

According to the report, the Iraqi security forces liberated several districts, including Abra al-Najjar, Abra Hanish, Greater Abra and Lesser Abra.

Iraqi forces launched on Sunday an offensive to take back the city of Tal Afar.

"You either surrender or die," Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi said in a televised speech announcing the offensive, addressing the militants.

Tal Afar, 50 miles (80 km) west of Mosul, was cut off from the rest of Daesh-held territory in June.

About 2,000 battle-hardened militants remain in the city, according to Iraqi military commanders.
