Diplomat Highlights Lebanon’s Place in Iran’s Foreign Policy Agenda

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian deputy foreign minister said Lebanon has a significant position in the foreign policy agenda of President Hassan Rouhani’s administration in the second term.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry’s two main priorities during President Rouhani’s second term would be expansion of regional cooperation and stronger economic diplomacy, in both of which Lebanon has a special position, Hossein Jaberi Ansari said in a meeting with President of Lebanon Michel Aoun in Beirut on Monday.

The senior Iranian diplomat, who has travelled to Lebanon for a series of political meetings, also praised the prominent role that the Lebanese government, army and nation play in countering the Zionist regime of Israel and terrorism.

For his part, Aoun called for the enhancement of relations between Tehran and Beirut.

He also described plans to settle economic woes as a top priority for the Lebanese administration.

In November 2016, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif became the first foreign diplomat to meet Lebanon’s newly-elected president.

In the meeting, Zarif stressed that Iran and Lebanon have many opportunities to expand political and economic relations, saying that they should make use of their common interests to promote stability and progress for the two nations.
