Iran Calls on UN to Address Saudi Regime’s Killing of Civilians

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi strongly condemned deadly airstrikes by the Saudi-led coalition north of the Yemeni capital of Sana’a that killed dozens of civilians, calling on the United Nations’ swift reaction to the massacre.

In a statement issued late on Wednesday, Qassemi denounced the Saudi-led coalition airstrike on a hotel in Arhab, 35 kilometers (22 miles) north of Sana’a, and expressed sympathy for the bereaved families of the victims.

“Intensified attacks on residential areas and civilian targets and preventing international organizations and institutions from having access to humanitarian relief are in violation of principles of humanitarian rights,” he said.

The spokesman further called on the UN and influential countries to intensify efforts for an immediate end to the Saudi regime’s attacks and take measures necessary to protect the lives of civilians, particularly those of women and children.

According to media reports, the Saudi-led coalition airstrike on Wednesday that hit the hotel in Arhab, killed at least 48 people, including dozens of civilians, and injuring many others.

Yemen’s defenseless people have been under massive attacks by the coalition for more than two years but Riyadh has reached none of its objectives in Yemen so far.

Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies have been carrying out deadly airstrikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

Over 12,000 Yemenis, including thousands of women and children, have lost their lives in the deadly military campaign.
