Hezbollah Chief Says Axis of Resistance Victorious in Syria

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Secretary-General of the Lebanese Hezbollah Resistance Movement Seyed Hassan Nasrallah declared the victory of the axis of resistance in the Syrian war, dismissing remaining fighting as scattered battles.

“We have won the war (in Syria) and what remains are just sporadic battles,” Nasrallah said, according to al-Akhbar daily.

“Our martyrs, wounded, detainees and people are changing equations and are making a future for the region, not just Lebanon,” he added.

The Hezbollah leader said that numerous plans for the region have failed but the “axis of resistance” had won. The “axis of resistance” refers to Iran, Syria, Hezbollah and other resistance groups in the region.

“The course of our project, for which we endured through a lot of harm, is the course of victory and the great results will change equations that benefit the nation,” he said.

Hezbollah’s media office confirmed the comments when contacted by The Daily Star.

“Since 2011, we were sure that what was going on was a huge incitement and that there is an America-Israeli-Qatari-Saudi Arabian project aiming to eliminate the resistance and settle the Palestinian plight,” Nasrallah further said.

Backed by his allies, Syrian President Bashar Assad has crushed numerous pockets of militant-held territory in the western Syrian cities of Aleppo, Homs and Damascus over the last year.

Ceasefires brokered by Russia, Iran and Turkey in remaining rebel-held areas of western Syria have freed up manpower on the government side, helping its advance east into the oil-rich province of Deir ez-Zor.

Syrian government forces last week reached Deir ez-Zor city, the provincial capital on the Euphrates River, breaking a Daesh siege of a government-held enclave and a nearby air base.
