Iran’s Zarif, US’s Tillerson May Meet in New York Next Week: Report

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his American counterpart Rex Tillerson are expected to meet on the sidelines of the 72nd annual session of the UN General Assembly next week, a report said.

According to the report carried by Foreign Policy on Friday, Tillerson would hold a first meeting on the Iran nuclear deal with Zarif and other parties to the 2015 agreement, officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), next week in New York.

Dignitaries from 193 nations will gather September 19 for a week of speeches and sideline meetings at the annual UN General Assembly in New York.

Zarif will attend the UN general assembly and hold talks with counterparts from Asian, European and neighboring countries.

The top diplomat is also slated to hold talks with the European Union foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, and some foreign ministers of the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) on issues of bilateral and international significance as well as the JCPOA.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is also scheduled to give a speech at the meeting.

Since the historic deal was signed in Vienna, the IAEA has repeatedly confirmed the Islamic Republic’s compliance with its commitments under the JCPOA, but some other parties, especially the US, have failed to live up to their undertakings.
