Minister Says Iran’s New Ballistic Missile ‘Strategic Weapon’
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s new homegrown ballistic missile that was unveiled on Friday can be guided through the final moments of engagement with the target, Defense Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami said, describing it as a “strategic missile” at Iran’s disposal.
In comments on Saturday, General Hatami said that its remarkable operational range and unique features have made Khorramshahr a very agile missile.
The strategic missile can cross the enemy’s air defense zone and could be guided from the launch to the moment it hits the target, he added.
Khorramshahr, a large ballistic missile named after an Iranian southwestern city that bore the brunt of an Iraqi surprise attack in the 1980s, was put on display on a truck in the military parades held in southern Tehran on Friday morning.
The ballistic missile has a range of 2,000 kilometers with the ability to carry a multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle (MIRV) weighing 1,800 kilograms.
According to Commander of the IRGC Aerospace Force Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, the new missile can be equipped with multiple warheads.
Iranian military experts and technicians have in recent years made great headways in manufacturing a broad range of indigenous equipment, making the armed forces self-sufficient in the defense sphere.
Iran maintains that its military might poses no threat to regional countries, stressing that the Islamic Republic’s defense doctrine is entirely based on deterrence.
