Syrian Forces Retake More Areas in Deir Ez-Zor

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syria’s army and its allies continued to make gains in their fight against Daesh terrorists in Deir ez-Zor, liberating more areas from the clutch of the Takfiri militants in the eastern province.

On Saturday, Syrian troops established full control over the villages of Ma’adan Atiq area in Deir ez-Zor after carrying out operations against Daesh terrorists in the western countryside of the province, according to SANA news agency.

Large groups of the terrorists were killed in the clashes, the report added.

On the eastern bank of the Euphrates River, army units re-established full control over the village of Mazloum and some strategic sites in the town of Khasham after inflicting major losses on Daesh militants there.

The report further said that Syrian warplanes also destroyed Daesh gathering centers in the areas of Khasham, Howeijet Sakker, al-Howeiqa, al-Jbaileh, al-Aridi and Kanamat in the eastern countryside of the province.

A military source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said that army units also made advances towards Ma’adan city in the eastern countryside of Raqqa province.

Recently, Syrian government troops crossed to the eastern bank of the Euphrates River in Deir ez-Zor for the first time since they broke a siege on parts of the eastern city earlier this month.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh, currently controlling parts of it.

According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
