IRGC Commandos Exercise Offensive Operation Northwest of Iran
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Commandos partaking in a military drill that the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has staged in Iran’s northwestern regions have exercised a heavy offensive operation in an area bordering Iraq, officials said Sunday.
General Habib Shahsavari, spokesperson for the ongoing Muharram war game, said the main stage of the drill began with an operation by commandos in the Kafarestan heights near the Iraqi border to exercise offense.
The security drill, held under the supervision of the IRGC's Hamze Sayyid al-Shohada Base, is underway across the heights near the city of Oshnavieh, the province of West Azarbaijan, he added.
According to the commander, the offensive operation by the commandos was coupled with heavy artillery fire, with logistical support from T-72S battle tanks.
The war game signals the message of peace and security to the friends, and reminds the enemies that the country’s borders will be powerfully protected against hostile moves, the general added.
Various military units, such as the IRGC infantry, the artillery, the electronic warfare units, ground force airborne division, missile units and drone squad have taken part in the war game.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the exercise, IRGC Ground Force Commander Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour said the purpose of the war game is to boost coordination among the military units and carry out combined operations involving various divisions.
He also noted that the drill’s zone used to be a hotbed of counter-revolutionary militants in the past, who have been cleansed following the IRGC’s mighty operations.
