Official Denies Report of Iran’s Consul in Erbil Being Summoned

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An informed official at the Iranian consulate in Erbil denied reports on Sunday that Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has summoned the Iranian consul.

The denial came after some Western and Kurdish media outlets claimed that the Erbil government has summoned Iranian consul Morteza Ebadi over what was said to be artillery attacks from Iran.

The media controversy seems to have been fueled by a military drill that the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has staged in Iran’s western and northwestern regions.

The Muharram war game, described by the IRGC as a “security drill”, is being held in the provinces of West Azarbaijan and Kurdistan.

General Habib Shahsavari, spokesperson for the war game, said the main stage of the drill began with an operation by commandos in the Kafarestan heights near the Iraqi border to exercise offense.

He also noted that the offensive operation was coupled with heavy artillery fire, with logistical support from T-72S battle tanks.
