Afghan Party Warns about Gov't's Efforts to Engineer Election Results

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Council for Protection and Stability in Afghanistan (CPSA) warned about engineering of the results of the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections, and called for reforms in the country’s election commission.

Masoud Terashtwall, spokesperson for CPSA referred to corruption and government influence in the Afghanistan election commission and said, “Afghanistan’s National Unity Government lacks political commitment to hold a transparent election.”

Terashtwall who is also a member of the Coordination Council of Political Parties of Afghanistan (CCPPA) noted,” CCPPA wants dissolution of election commission and fundamental reforms.”

“CCPPA will boycott the election,” he warned, noting that the Afghan government should start efforts for reform the election commission as soon as possible.

The official noted that if government does not show responsibility, CCPPA will present ‘alternative options’ to the international community.

Afghan government critics are calling for more transparency in the elections to prevent repetition of controversial Afghanistan 2014 presidential elections which resulted formation of current national unity government in the country.

Parliamentary elections were scheduled to be held in Afghanistan on 15 October 2016, to elect members of the House of the People, but were postponed to 7 July 2018. The country’s presidential election is also scheduled to be held in 2019.
