Minister Says Iran Arrests Terrorists during Muharram Mourning Events

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi said the country’s intelligence forces identified and arrested a few number of terrorists before they could carry out their anti-security plots.

Speaking on Monday, Alavi said the arrested terrorists planned to conduct operation against Iran security during Muharram mourning ceremonies.

The minister reiterated that they were a few number of terrorists that intended to stage operations in different provinces, adding that terrorists were not active as organized teams and were active as individuals.

On October 1, Shiite Muslims in Iran and elsewhere in the world  marked the day of Ashura, to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions.

Ashura, the 10th day of the lunar month of Muharram, marks the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his 72 faithful companions in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD.

Every year on Ashura, millions of Shiites around the world, dressed in black, take to the streets and mosques to mourn the sad occasion.
