Iran’s Parliament to Continue Consultations with Administration on Int’l Issues: Speaker
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani made assurances that the lawmakers will continue consultations with the country’s administration on regional and international developments.
Speaking at an open session of the parliament on Wednesday, Larijani pointed to a closed session held earlier in the day attended by Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and said in the meeting, Zarif briefed the lawmakers about the latest regional and international developments.
“I think such consultations between the parliament and the administration will continue considering future international developments,” he added.
Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, MP Elias Hazrati said the meeting between Zarif and the parliamentarians this morning focused on regional issues, including the Syrian crisis and the recent referendum held in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region.
He added that in the closed session, various scenarios to counteract possible US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and six world powers, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), were also discussed.
Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, US, Britain, France, and Germany) on July 14, 2015, reached a conclusion over the text of the JCPOA.
The accord took effect in January 2016 and was supposed to terminate all nuclear-related sanctions against Iran all at once, but its implementation has been hampered mainly due to US policies.
US President Donald Trump, who has called the JCPOA an “embarrassment” and “the worst deal ever negotiated,” is expected to announce that he will decertify the deal.
