Iranian Flotilla Docks at Russia’s Makhachkala
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian naval flotilla, comprising the homegrown Damavand destroyer and Paykan missile-launching vessel, berthed at Russia’s coastal city of Makhachkala, the capital city of the Republic of Dagestan.
The commander of the Iranian naval flotilla is scheduled to meet and confer with Russian naval commanders and also President of the Republic of Dagestan Vladimir Vasilev during their stay in Makhachkala.
The Iranian naval watercraft had set sail for the Russian port in the Caspian Sea on October 14.
Commander of the Navy’s Caspian flotilla Admiral Ahmad Reza Baqeri said at a see-off ceremony in the northern port city of Bandar Anzali that conveying the message of peace and friendship of the Iranian people and government to Russia’s Dagestan is the main goal of the trip.
In remarks released on October 13, Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari had announced that the naval flotilla will return to Iran after a three-day trip and following a one-day joint military exercise with the Russian navy aimed at exchanging experiences and displaying the power and capabilities of the Iranian navy.
In July, a Russian naval flotilla held a joint exercise with Iran’s Navy in the Caspian Sea.
The Russian ‘Makhachkala’ flotilla, under the command of Captain Dmitriov, had berthed at Bandar Anzali for a three-day visit as part of programs intended to boost military cooperation between the two countries.
