Iran Welcomes Closer Economic Cooperation with Philippines: President

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani highlighted the importance of relations with the Philippines and said the Islamic Republic welcomes closer cooperation with the Southeast Asian country in all fields, economy in particular.

Speaking at a meeting with the Philippines’ new ambassador to Iran, Wilfredo Santos, in Tehran on Saturday, President Rouhani hailed the developing ties between Tehran and Manila as “good and friendly”.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes the promotion of cooperation with the Philippines particularly in the economic sector,” he said, adding that grounds are provided for closer ties between the two countries.

Santos, for his part, said that Manila feels the need more than ever to cement its relations with Tehran, especially in the areas of economy and investment.

During the meeting, the Filipino diplomat also submitted his letter of credence to the Iranian president.

Iran and the Philippines started bilateral relations in 1974. In recent years, especially since the coming into force of the JPOCA, the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers that terminated all nuclear-related anti-Tehran sanctions, the two countries have expressed their desire to work to enhance the existing friendly relations and to increase cooperation in various political, economic and cultural areas.
