Iranian Police Conduct Air Patrols along Iraqi Border ahead of Arbaeen

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian police forces conduct air patrols along the common border with Iraq to ensure the security of pilgrims visiting the Arab country for Arbaeen, a police official said.

In remarks released on Sunday, Brigadier General Hosseinali Mostajeran said the police forces with their new equipment are at the service of Iranian pilgrims visiting Iraq.

He added that one airplane, seven helicopters, and eight drones have been deployed to Mehran border crossing in the western province of Ilam to ensure the security of pilgrims.

He also said the police helicopters have so far carried out 21 sorties and 41 hours of air patrols over the Mehran border crossing.

Arbaeen, which is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shiite Imam, Imam Hussein (AS).

Each year, a huge crowd of Shiites flock to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites.

Officials predict that the number of Iranian pilgrims would hit 3 million this year.
