Analyst Sees West’s Recognition of Iran’s N. Rights as "Victory for Tehran"

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior Lebanese analyst said that the recognition of Iran’s rights to access nuclear energy by the western countries was a "great victory" for Tehran.

“Iran... was able to force the US and the western countries to confess that Iran is a great country and plays an influential role in the region,” Head of Lebanon’s Arab and International Studies Center Qalib Qandil told Tasnim News Agency, referring to the successful presence of President Hassan Rouhani and his accompanying delegation at the 68th UN annual General Assembly.

He said that the Americans’ move to recognize Iran’s might provides an opportunity for Iran to emerge as a powerful country in the world, which "enjoys its entire political rights, atop which there are the Iranian nation’s nuclear rights."

In his address to the UN General Assembly last week, US President Barack Obama welcomed Iranian officials’ statements on rejection of nuclear weapons, and stressed that the US and Iran should find a way that respects the rights of the Iranian people.

Obama stressed that recent overtures from Iran on its nuclear program could start the United States and Iran down a “long road towards a different relationship - one based on mutual interest and mutual respect.”

"We are not seeking regime change, and we respect the right of the Iranian people to access peaceful nuclear energy. Instead, we insist that the Iranian government meet its responsibilities under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and UN Security Council resolutions," Obama underlined.
