Condolences Pour in over Deadly Quake in Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Condolences poured in after a deadly earthquake in Western Iran left nearly 400 people dead and caused massive destruction.

In a statement on Monday, President Michael D Higgins, on behalf of the people of Ireland, extended his sympathies to those affected by the earthquake.

“May they receive the urgent assistance, and the solidarity, they need from the global community and their institutions,” he said.

British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson also expressed his deepest condolences to the people of Iran and Iraq, saying, “The UK stands ready to help the victims and the recovery effort”.

Nearly 400 people have been killed and 6,000 injured in the quake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale.

In a message posted on his Twitter account, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the loss of lives in the devastating earthquake.

“My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones in the tragic earthquake that has affected parts of Iran and Iraq. I pray that those injured recover at the earliest,” Modi tweeted.

Also, as of Monday evening, the presidents and senior officials of Russia, Syria, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Italy, and Turkey, in separate messages, extended their sympathies to the Iranian government, people and the bereaved families of the victims.

Iranians, fighting time, hurried early Monday to dig out survivors trapped in dozens of collapsed buildings in the quake, whose epicenter was near Halabjah, southeast of Iraq’s Sulaymaniyah.

Hospitals in the western cities of Eslamabad-e-Gharb, Sarpol-e-Zahab, and Qasre-e-Shirin are packed with the injured people as the death toll is expected to rise.
