Iran Stresses Negotiated Solution to Zimbabwe Events

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian Foreign Ministry on Thursday called on warring parties in the African state of Zimbabwe to resort to peaceful means to resolve their disputes.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran wants all sides involved in recent developments in Zimbabwe to settle problems on the wishes and interests of the people of Zimbabwe and through dialogue and peaceful means within the framework of the constitution and democratic process, free from any violence or use of force,” Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said.

He, at the same time, noted that Tehran is closely monitoring developments in the African country.

Qassemi touched on the efforts of African bodies, especially the African Union and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), as well as some African leaders, and expressed the hope that these efforts would reach the desired outcome as soon as possible.

In latest development, Zimbabwe's embattled President Robert Mugabe has been shown in talks with the commander of the country's defense forces, a day after the military seized control of the capital.

Photographs published by the pro-Mugabe Herald newspaper are the first images seen of the veteran leader since he was placed under house arrest Wednesday morning and the military staged an apparent coup.
