TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Thousands of protestors took to the streets across Iraq’s Kurdistan region on Monday over delayed payments of salaries and austerity measures.

Protests erupted in the cities of Sulaymaniyah, Kalar, Ranya, Taqtaq, Chamchamal, Koya, Rawanduz, Halabja, Said Sadiq, and Qaladze in the Kurdistan Region, NRT reported.

According to the report, teachers and employees gathered in front of education directorate and blocked the Salim Street in protest to the government’s austerity measures.

“Teachers are sick and tired of this government,” a teacher said.

Another teacher called on Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to help the teachers in the region against the KRG government.

In Ranya, teachers and employees gathered near the public garden of the city protesting against lack of services and delays in payment of wages.

In the district of Taq Taq, protesters blocked the main road between Erbil and Kirkuk, burning tires.

“They (referring to KRG officials) are going to Germany for Christmas but we don’t have money here,” a teacher said.

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani is currently on an official visit to Germany.

A group of people also took to the streets in Takiya sub-district west of Sulaymaniyah, blocking the Kirkuk- Sulaymaniyah main road.

Protesters in Sangasar entered police stations and the buildings in the sub-district’s directorate.

In Piramagroon northwest of Sulaymaniyah, protestors torched the offices of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Change Movement (Gorran) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) after they poured into the streets against delays in payment of salaries.
