Zarif Derides Trump’s ‘Such Respect’ for Iranians

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif scorned US President Donald Trump’s fake support for the Iranian people, saying Trump has not only insulted them, but also made moves to deprive them from the benefits of the JCPOA.

“Trump has an odd way of showing “such respect” for Iranians: from labeling them a “terrorist nation” & banning them from visiting the US, to petty insults on the name of the Persian Gulf,” Zarif wrote on his Twitter account on Thursday.

“But best of all, “helping them” by depriving them of the economic dividends from the #JCPOA,” Iran’s top diplomat added, referring to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, a nuclear deal reached by Tehran and six world powers in July 2015.

Since he entered the White House, Trump has been trying to impede the implementation of the JCPOA.

Some cities in Iran were scenes of peaceful demonstrations in the past days after prices of several staples rose by up to 40 percent.

Sporadic riots broke out in some cities amid the peaceful rallies. According to some unverified reports, at least 21 people, including a number of the security forces, were killed in the riots.

In the meantime, Trump and a number of other US officials, including Vice President Mike Pence, have sided with the opportunists and rioters.

“Such respect for the people of Iran …. You will see great support from the United States at the appropriate time!” Trump tweeted on Wednesday.

According to Article 27 of the Iranian Constitution, “public gatherings and marches are allowed so long as the participants do not carry arms and are not in violation of the fundamental principles of Islam.”

Iranian officials maintain that people have the right to stage protests to express their opinions, as long as rallies comply with the legal conditions.
