Al Khalifa Regime Seeking Escalation of Crisis in Bahrain: Opposition Figure

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The spokesman for the Haq Movement for Liberty and Democracy, an opposition political organization in Bahrain, slammed the Manama regime for its continued crackdown on the people and said it is seeking to escalate the current crisis in the Arab country.

“The Al Khalifa regime’s strategy is to escalate the crisis in the country,” Abdulghani al-Khanjar told Tasnim.

“Given that we are nearing the parliamentary elections, the government is trying to put dissidents at a crossroads,” he said, adding that the Bahraini regime is seeking to force opposition figures to either give in to the orders of the regime or face their replacement by others.

The spokesman further painted a gloomy picture of the future of the Bahraini crisis and said he does not believe that the situation would improve in 2018 because the Bahraini regime has tied the fate of the country to the developments in regional countries.

Bahrain, a close ally of the US in the Persian Gulf region, has been witnessing almost daily protests against the ruling Al Khalifa dynasty since early 2011, with Manama using heavy-handed measures in an attempt to crush the demonstrations.

Scores of Bahrainis have been killed and hundreds of others injured and arrested in the ongoing crackdown on the peaceful demonstrations.

Amnesty International and many other international rights organizations have frequently censured the Bahraini regime for the rampant human rights abuses against opposition groups and anti-regime protesters.
