PUIC Conference Kicks Off in Tehran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - The 13th conference of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Member States (PUIC) got underway in Tehran on Tuesday morning.

Attended by top parliamentary officials from the Muslim countries, the PUIC conference is going to discuss the regional and international developments and the joint efforts among the parliaments of OIC members.

Preparations for the conference were made during an extraordinary meeting of the Parliamentary Union of OIC Member States (PUOICM) on Palestine, held in December.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani delivered speeches at the opening of the conference.

The meeting, which will close on Wednesday evening, follows a series of sideline gatherings that had begun on January 12, such as the 20th session of the General Committee of PUIC and the 39th Meeting of the PUIC Executive Committee.

The OIC, the second largest inter-governmental organization after the United Nations, has around 60 members.

The organization, established in 1969, was created to protect the interests of Muslims and promote international peace.
