Parliamentary Commission to Hold Meeting on Iranian Oil Tanker Tragedy

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian parliament’s Construction Commission will get briefed on the situation involving the deaths of 32 sailors in a Jan 6 collision of an Iranian oil tanker with a Chinese freighter and subsequent fire and explosions that led to the sinking of the tanker, a lawmaker said.

The Construction Commission is scheduled to hold a session on the oil tanker tragedy attended by Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh and Minister of Cooperatives, Labor, and Social Welfare Ali Rabiei next week, Mohammad Damadi, a member of the commission, told Tasnim.

The Ports and Maritime Organization of Iran (PMOI) officials will also be present at the meeting to discuss various aspects of the incident, Damadi added.

The commission will brief the parliament once investigations into the case conclude, he went on to say.

All crew members of the Iran oil tanker, Sanchi, including 30 Iranians and two Bangladeshi sailors, were tragically killed due to inhaling toxic gas and the huge fire which embraced the tanker since the outset of the tragic incident on January 6.

Iran’s Ambassador to China Ali-Asghar Khaji said on Monday that investigating the reasons of the sad Sanchi accident are on top priority of the Iranian Embassy in Beijing.
