Syrian Speaker Urges PUIC Action against Terrorism
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Speaker of Syria’s parliament asked the participants in an ongoing conference of Islamic parliaments in Tehran to push for resolutions to boost efforts to tackle terrorist groups.
In an address to the 13th conference of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Member States (PUIC) in Tehran on Wednesday, Speaker of the People’s Council of Syria Hammouda Youssef Sabbagh said the main duty of the representatives of Islamic parliaments attending the PUIC conference is to pass resolutions for intensified battle against terrorism.
“We should demonstrate that true Islam is always against terrorism,” the Syrian speaker added.
Likening terrorism to a cancerous tumor that could affect all regions in the world, Sabbagh said the PUIC member states should feel duty bound to address the threat of terrorism.
He also praised Iran for supporting his country in the war on terrorist groups, stressing that the Damascus government would never come to a compromise with terrorists.
Syria has been gripped by a civil war since March 2011, when militants from various terrorist groups, including Daesh (ISIL), poured into the Arab country.
In November 2017, Daesh terrorists were flushed out of their last stronghold in Syria’s Al-Bukamal. The city’s liberation marked an end to the group’s self-proclaimed caliphate it had declared in 2014.
According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
Throughout these years, Iran has remained a close ally of Syria and supports its legitimate government in the face of foreign-backed militancy.
