JCPOA Not Renegotiable under Any Conditions: Iranian MP
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A member of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission reiterated that the country would never renegotiate its nuclear deal with six world powers, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Shahrouz Barzegar pointed to a recent meeting between the US and European officials in London on the 2015 nuclear agreement, and said, “The JCPOA is not renegotiable under any circumstances.”
During the negotiations prior to the deal, the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, US, Britain, France, and Germany) had already agreed on all of the articles of the agreement, he added.
The lawmaker further emphasized that Iran would never accept moves by some Western countries, the US in particular, to deprive the Islamic Republic of the benefits of the JCPOA.
The remarks came as US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said America’s European counterparts in the nuclear deal have finally begun talks to develop a “side agreement” to the agreement.
Speaking to reporters in Warsaw on Saturday, Tillerson confirmed that Britain, France and Germany have all agreed to work on the JCPOA.
Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump again waived sanctions against Iran that were lifted as part of the landmark 2015 nuclear deal, but threatened he would terminate the agreement if “significant flaws” in it are not fixed.
Ali Akbar Velayati, an international adviser to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, has rejected Trump’s calls for renegotiating the JCPOA, stressing that the nuclear deal will remain unchanged.
