Trump's State of Union Address Proof of His Ignorance of Iran: FM Zarif

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif strongly condemned the recent meddlesome remarks made by the US president against Iran, noting that Donald Trump’s first State of the Union address one more time confirmed his “ignorance of Iran and region”.

“Trump again confirms his ignorance of Iran & region. Everyone knows where he stands; and it's certainly not with Iranians. His 'virtuous', ‘democratically- elected' clients in our region may cheer, but not those on receiving end of their tyranny & weapons, incl Yemeni children,” Zarif said in a message posted on his official Twitter account on Wednesday.

In his maiden speech for national unity on Tuesday evening, the US president stood on the podium before Republican and Democratic lawmakers to elaborate on his policies over the past year.

Trump began the speech by congratulating members of his administration for their efforts to “make American great again for all Americans,” winning a standing ovation from Republicans while Democrats remained in their seats.

He further repeated his meddlesome remarks against the internal affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

“America stands with the people of Iran in their courageous struggle for freedom,” he added.

In late December, peaceful protests over economic problems broke out in a number of Iranian cities, but the gatherings turned violent when groups of participants, some of them armed, vandalized public property and launched attacks on police stations and government buildings.

Security forces say many rioters arrested in the recent unrest had been trained by the MKO terrorists or had links with the Takfiri terrorist groups.

Elsewhere in his speech, Trump reiterated previous accusations regarding “fundamental flaws” in the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers, once again denouncing the deal as “terrible.”

This is while Iran has vehemently rejected the possibility of renegotiation, warning that any hostile action against the accord will jeopardize regional and global peace and security.
