700 MW of Clean Electricity to Be Added to Iran’s National Grid Soon: Official
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s deputy energy minister said about 700 megawatts (MW) of electricity generated by the country’s clean power plants will be added to the national grid by late September 2018.
Speaking to the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), Seyed Mohammad Sadeqzadeh said the number of power plants generating electricity from renewable resources such as wind and sun is growing in the country.
“Currently, clean energy production is one of the main strategies for achieving sustainable development in the world,” he noted.
The deputy minister further said that so far, power plants capable of producing 450 MW of renewable energy have been launched in various parts of Iran.
The construction of more clean power plants with a capacity to produce 600 to 700 MW in the country is underway, he said, adding that they would be operational by late September.
Back in November 2015, Iranian Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian unveiled plans for an increase in the country’s capacity of electricity generation and exports to neighboring countries.
Iran is now exporting around 12 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity to its neighbors each year, while the imports stand at an annual level of 4 billion kWh, the minister said at the time.
The country’s electricity industry ranks 14th in the world and first in the Middle East in terms of electricity generation.
