US-Led Coalition Attacks Syrian Popular Forces

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - The US-led military coalition in an attempt to support terrorism targeted Syrian popular forces that were fighting Daesh (ISIS or ISIL) terrorists and the US allied Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Deir ez-Zor countryside.

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), forces of the US-led coalition on Wednesday midnight attacked popular forces that were fighting Daesh terrorist organization and SDF forces between the villages of Khsham and al-Tabyia in Deir ez-Zor northeastern countryside.

As a result of the US-led coalition attacks, scores of people killed and many others injured, SANA reported on Thursday, describing the US move as an ‘aggression’.

Reuters has cited a US official as saying on condition of anonymity that over 100 pro-government forces were killed in the assault.

The US military in a statement confirmed late Wednesday it launched airstrikes on Syrian government-backed troops and claimed that it conducted the attack in retaliation to Syrian popular forces’ attack on SDF forces.

The US has around 2,000 military personnel in northern Syria supporting the SDF, which is an alliance of militias in northern and eastern Syria and largely dominated by the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG).

The statement said the coalition “conducted strikes against attacking forces to repel the act of aggression against partners engaged in the Global Coalition's defeat-Daesh mission.”

It also claimed that the US-led attack was “in self-defense”.

The US and its allies have been bombarding what they call Daesh positions inside Syria since September 2014 without any authorization from the Damascus government or a UN mandate.

The strikes, however, have on many occasions resulted in civilian casualties and failed to fulfill their declared aim of countering terrorism.

The Syrian government has on several occasions written to the UN, complaining that the US is flagrantly violating the sovereignty of Syria by targeting residential neighborhoods.
