3 Arrested for Killing Police Officer in SE Iran: Spokesman

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Police Spokesman Brigadier General Saeed Montazer-al-Mahdi said three people have been arrested for killing an officer in the southeastern border city of Khash in Sistan and Balouchestan Province.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference in Tehran on Monday, Brigadier General Montazer-al-Mahdi said after the martyrdom of an anti-drug police officer, the Law Enforcement forces investigated the issue and managed to arrest three culprits behind the murder.

He added that all the three arrested persons are among the drug lords in the eastern parts of the country and have criminal backgrounds.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the spokesman pointed to the drug seizures of the police forces and said since the beginning of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2017), the forces have managed to capture 645 tons of various kind of illicit drugs.

Iran, which has a 900-kilometer common border with Afghanistan, has been used as the main conduit for smuggling Afghan drugs to narcotics kingpins in Europe.

Despite high economic and human costs, the Islamic Republic has been actively fighting drug-trafficking over the past three decades.

The country has spent more than $700 million on sealing its borders and preventing the transit of narcotics destined for European, Arab and Central Asian countries.

The war on drug trade originating from Afghanistan has claimed the lives of nearly 4,000 Iranian police officers over the past four decades.
