Moon Calls for International Support for North Korea-US Dialogue

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – South Korean President Moon Jae-in called Thursday for international support to ensure inter-Korean dialogue forged by the ongoing Winter Olympics can lead to talks between North Korea and the United States.

Moon made the comments as he expressed gratitude to Norway for supporting South Korea's policy toward North Korea, during a summit with Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg at the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae in Seoul, said presidential vice spokesperson Ko Min-jung, Yonhap news agency reported.

Solberg was in South Korea to attend PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

Moon's latest appeal demonstrated South Korea's hope that a new thaw in inter-Korean relations could help set the stage for talks between North Korea and the US.

North Korea leader Kim Jong-un has offered to hold a summit with Moon in Pyongyang through his younger sister, Kim Yo-jong, in a dramatic gesture of reconciliation after years of tensions and provocations.

The influential sister visited South Korea last week as a special envoy of the North Korean leader and met with Moon. She attended the opening ceremony of the Winter Games.

The US said it is willing to engage North Korea to make clear Pyongyang must give up its nuclear weapons.

"The maximum pressure campaign will intensify until the North Korean regime denuclearizes," a White House National Security Council spokesperson said Tuesday in emailed comments to Yonhap News Agency.
