Iran Top General Vows Severe Response after Tehran Mob Attack

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri said the security forces will harshly counter violent law-breaking to prevent a recurrence of the recent mob attack that killed three police forces in north Tehran.

In a message on Thursday, Major General Baqeri offered his condolences on the martyrdom of three police forces and two Basij (voluntary) forces in a mob attack in northern Tehran.

His comments came after three Iranian police officers and two Basij forces were killed on Tehran’s Pasdaran Street on February 19 when tying to quell a disturbance involving Gonabadi Dervishes, a Sufi community in Iran.

Describing the attack on police as  “brutal”, Major General Baqeri stressed that the Iranian Armed Forces, including the “brave police and selfless Basij forces”, will not permit the “rioters and law-breakers” to create such disturbances again.

The Iranian security forces will severely crush any move threatening the security of citizens, the senior commander underscored.

During the Monday clashes on Pasdaran Street, one rioter drove a bus into a group of police officers, killing three and wounding others. In a separate attack, one member of the Basij was run over and killed, while another was stabbed to death.

Police spokesperson said 30 police forces were injured and many public and private properties were destroyed in the riot.
