Manama Trying to Cover Up Its Failure to End Popular Uprising: Opposition Figure
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior Bahraini opposition figure and political activist said Manama’s recent claims that it has arrested the members of “a terror cell” linked to Tehran have their roots in the Al Khalifa regime’s failures to end the popular uprising in the Persian Gulf country.
Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Rashed al-Rashed, a senior member of Bahrain’s Islamic Action Society, said the Bahraini regime’s “repetitive” allegation that it has arrested 116 suspected members of a “terror cell” allegedly linked to Iran, is a disgrace to the regime.
When the ruling regime claims that it discovers a terrorist group with such power each month, in fact, it is defaming itself because it shows that the regime is not popular in Bahrain and its legitimacy is questionable, he noted.
The Al Khalifa’s failures to end the seven-year-old popular uprising in Bahrain have made the regime to create scenarios against its people, the opposition figure said.
His comments came after Bahrain said it has arrested 116 suspected members of a “terror cell” allegedly linked to Iran, claiming that as many as 48 detainees had received military training in Iran, Iraq, and Lebanon.
Bahrain, a close ally of the US in the Persian Gulf region, has been witnessing protests against the ruling Al Khalifa dynasty since early 2011, with Manama using heavy-handed measures in an attempt to crush the demonstrations.
Scores of Bahrainis have been killed and hundreds of others injured and arrested in the ongoing crackdown on the peaceful demonstrations.
