Syria Army Continues to Make Gains against Militants in Ghouta

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Syrian army on Saturday advanced into half of the town of Mesraba in the Eastern Ghouta district, inflicting major losses on Takfiri terrorists there.

According to the latest reports coming out of Eastern Ghouta, the town of Mesraba, which represents the last link between the northern and southern halves of the Eastern Ghouta district, is now scene of heavy clashes between the army and Takfiri elements.

The so-called Jaish al-Islam and Failaq al-Rahman outfits have suffered major losses in the past two days, the reports said.

The Syrian army has also advanced into the area between the two large towns of Harasta and Douma, they added.

Aid agencies have tried to deliver aid into eastern Ghouta, but they have only been able to bring in a portion of the amount they wanted as Takfiri militants continue to bomb areas around the besieged enclave.

The government has opened several safe routes out of eastern Ghouta for civilians, but none are known to have left so far the rebels are preventing them from fleeing the fighting.

Takfiri groups in eastern Ghouta deny this, but eyewitnesses on Friday saw gunfire and mortar fire from inside the rebel territory near one of the crossing points.

Eastern Ghouta, a besieged area on the outskirts of Damascus with some 400,000 people, has witnessed deadly violence over the past few weeks, as Takfiri terrorist outfits have launched mortar attacks on the Syrian capital in the face of an imminent humiliating defeat, killing around 20 civilians in two weeks.

The Syrian army is making steady advances in the enclave, but it is facing a hostile West, which is threatening airstrikes to stop the push. President Bashar al-Assad vowed last week that Syrian forces would continue the campaign until the whole area is retaken.
